DATE:               Friday 11 July
TIME:                1:00pm – 2:00pm

DESCRIPTION:   This workshop will look at how the Holy Spirit equips you to be Christ’s witness. Everyone has a vocation. You may not be called to marriage, priesthood or religious life, but you still have a vocation.

The essence of this vocation is mission - to witness to Christ and the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Each member of the Church has a unique and irreplaceable vocation which will take into account their individuality and unique place in the world. They have also been individually and uniquely ‘gifted’ by the Holy Spirit to fulfil that vocation.

This presentation will look at examples of how discerning and using the gifts we received at Baptism can change lives and bring God’s love and healing to those around us. It looks at the real clues in our lives: the Church, our uniqueness and giftedness, the context in which we live our lives. These are all important clues discerning our vocation and our mission We will show how these gifts have been used in the Church by the saints – particularly WYD 2008 patrons such as Mother Teresa and Pier Giorgio Frassati – but also in the lives of ordinary Christians.

TITLE:              Women and Intimacy

PRESENTED BY: Anne Avice, Council for Marriage and Family

DATE:               Thursday 10 July
TIME:                1:30pm to 2:30pm
VENUE:             Thomas Carr Centre

DESCRIPTION:    This talk is designed for young women who are considering marriage as a vocation.

Covered in this talk are factors that undermine women’s ability to relate in healthy ways. Some of these factors include messages coming from society about how women should behave and inherited female shame (or a feeling of not being good enough).  If not understood these factors lead women to seek approval in relationships by being over responsible and “too nice” at the cost of compromising their own self.

To overcome this tendency each young women will be invited to develop a relationship with herself and God so as to grow in understanding of her absolute worth. From this basis she is then able to enter a relationship confident enough to set a standard of relating that allows her the freedom to be all that she is created to be without unhealthy compromise or an exaggerated concern for taking care of the other.  Also covered will be danger signs to be watchful of when dating.

About the speaker:  Anne has a background in psychology and is a graduate of the John Paul II Institute.  She works as a relationship counsellor and her special interest is supporting and strengthening women survivors of domestic violence.

PRESENTED BY:     Father Michael McKenna, Catholic Chaplain to the University of Melbourne
DATE:                   Friday 11 July
TIME:                    3:00pm - 4:00pm
VENUE:                 Australian Catholic University, St Patrick’s Campus

DESCRIPTION: Australian culture has been one of the most explicitly secular in the world.  Is this an obstacle or an opportunity in announcing the Gospel?  What is different about making the Gospel heard here, to making it heard in cultures where the Christian view has a privileged place?  Or cultures where another religious view dominates?  What is the difference between “secular” and “secularist”?

Victoria’s first university, The University of Melbourne, was established in 1853 and exemplifies our secular culture. At the beginning, the University was forbidden to offer degrees in divinity, or to have clergy on its staff.  For some, that has been understood as a guarantee of free expression, where no single religion or denomination dominates. For others, it has been understood as implying a privileged position to the secularist view.  In either case, how can the Gospel best be proclaimed?

In this workshop, a team from the Catholic Chaplaincy at the University of Melbourne will present their observations and insights about these questions and invite you to share yours.

TITLE:              The Myth of Faith Vs Science

PRESENTED BY:     Fr Max Polak, Opus Dei
DATE:                   Saturday 12 July
TIME:                    11:30AM – 12:30PM
VENUE:                 Australian Catholic University, St Patrick’s Campus

DESCRIPTION:   The frequently surfacing media angle that pits faith (and in particular, the Catholic Church) against scientific enquiry and advances is based on faulty history and other indiscretions.

A number of important scholars have put forward the thesis that modern science owes its momentum precisely to the Judaeo-Christian understanding of the world, which overcame superstition and fatalism. Science as we know it began to emerge not in the Renaissance but well before in the Middle Ages.

Controversies like that of Galileo involved complex issues of personalities and cultural change and do not represent the general attitude of the Church to learning and progress. Many outstanding men and women who contributed to scientific and technological advances espoused Christian faith.  Many elite contemporary scientists identify themselves as Christian or hold to belief in a supreme being.

Speaker:  Fr. Max Polak BSc., MSc.(MIT), SThd (Navarre)   Parish Priest of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, West Melbourne.  Formerly Catholic Chaplain to the University of Tasmania and University of Waikato (). Fr. Max holds degrees in aeronautics and astronautics.
